Description | The paper is focused on (para)heraldic concessions for the Gonzaga dynasty of Mantua from Wenceslas IV, King of the Romans, and Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg. In 1394, 1403 and 1432/33, the Mantuan lords were granted new coats of arms. At the same time, they also received devices from these rulers, namely, the personal symbols/badges of the sovereigns and their courtly orders, which were the kingfisher (Wenceslas IV) and the dragon (Sigismund of Luxembourg). The author attempts to reconstruct these concessions, analyse their function and put them in the wider context of late medieval courtly culture. |
