Description | In the Praise of Grace I my talk I intend to introduce my research on Ugo Foscolo’s unfinished poem Inni alle Grazie (Hymns to the Graces), mainly composed in 1812-1815. Hymns to the Graces are dedicated to Antonio Canova who was carving the sculpture of the Three Graces at the time of Foscolo’s composition. To Foscolo, the myths of Graces have a social and political meanings: the three goddess symbolise the origins of civilisation since they support arts and poetry, and they also embody values such as gratitude, beauty, solidarity, joy, generosity that provide an antidote to wars and conflicts. |
