Description | The conversation-analytic study focuses on code-switching in English as a foreign language (EFL) classes. The data consists of video recordings from 5 upper-secondary schools in the Czech Republic, where 3 to 5 EFL lessons were recorded. I analyzed sequences in which Czech was used by the teacher or the students to deal with word meaning in whole class interaction, and the analysis shows that Czech is commonly used for this purpose even though the teacher maximizes the use of the target language. Moreover, it shows how teachers‘ questions may influence students‘ code choice in their answers. |
