| Description | The topic of my contribution falls into the area of rehabilitation of Aristotle's concept of moral character (or moral virtue). Rehabilitation of the classic concept can be done in a several ways, but the area of my interest is the content update of this concept with a help of psychological sciences. My intention will be to prove that, despite many parallels of the classical concept to contemporary psychology, many of these proposals are not suitable for a real update and rehabilitation of Aristotle's concept, as they neglect the meaning and value of this concept. At the heart of my contribution is a reflection on the value of Aristotle's concept of virtue, which type of updating can be beneficial to this concept, which would be superfluous and which would be harmful. I consider the improvement of our orientation and practice in moral space to be a key value of Aristotle's concept. Aristotle's ethical theory achieves this goal by carefully considering an intuitive conception of moral character and setting it in a eudaimonistic framework, in other words, by clarifying the meaning and interrelationships of many concepts that we commonly associate with morality and living a good and contented life. |
