Description | The presented study focuses on the fate of architects who were active around 1900 in Moravian Ostrava, i.e. in an industrial center that was still on the periphery of architecture and art. Case studies focusing on the life and works of the students of Otto Wagner, Karl Benirschke, and Otokar Bém, as well as of Vienna Polytechnic graduate Felix Neumann, Prague student Bohumil Îidlick˘ and their colleague František Tichý, aim to explore the relationship between architects employed in local architectural offices and their employers. A key contribution to this issue is Felix Neumann’s dispute with his employee Hermann Müller; this dispute took place in court as well as in the press. This ties in to the second intention of the article – to point out how the practice of employing architects by construction companies at the time complicates present efforts to determine the authorship of certain buildings. The study goes on to show that in order for an architect on the periphery to succeed, he had to become not only a practically oriented entrepreneur but also a figure engaged in social circles. The life story of Bohumil Židlický also serves as proof of how volatile this position may have been and what risks the business in the construction industry posed. |
