Description The text studies the terms of gypsy origin documented in the Mexican slang dictionaries published in the 20th century. The period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries would be the last phase in which the Gypsy component of Spanish slang, known then as caló jergal, could have influenced the enrichment of Mexican slang, also called caló, that retains this name until today. We base ourselves on the partial coincidences of the Gypsy loanwords in the Spanish slang repertoires of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which appear in the 19th-century Mexican slang dictionaries as well. If we compare the Gypsy loanwords in the dictionaries of Spanish criminal slang and Mexican caló, we note coincidences but also differences in their structure and semantic changes. We aim to separate the common tradition of Mexican innovation and study the directions in which properly Mexican Gypsy loanwords have evolved.
