| Description | The postoperative neurological condition of patients after resection of meningiomas of the brain, which were accompanied by significant collateral oedema, often deteriorates in the first postoperative days. Although meningiomas are mostly benign in nature, they often produce significant collateral edema due to numerous pial connections. After resection of such tumors, redistribution of brain tissue into the postresection cavity occurs in the early postoperative phase. This relatively rapid expansion of the brain leads primarily to further progression of cerebral edema. This is often so extensive that it leads to displacement of midline structures. The patient's neurological condition deteriorates. Even intensive anti-edema treatment with corticosteroids and Mannitol does not help and it is necessary to perform early decompressive craniotomy, which usually improves the neurological condition of the patient immediately after the operation.
