Description | Wild mammals and ticks play an important role in maintaining and spreading zoonoses in nature, but also in captive animals. The aim of the work was to determine the seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., Coxiella burnetii and Francisella tularensis in wild rodents captured in the area of the Brno Zoo and at the same time to detect B. burgdorferi s.l. and Rickettsia sp. In 2018, 58 rodents were captured at the Brno Zoo and 166 ticks were collected. Rodent heartwashes were used for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). DNA was isolated from ticks followed by detection of pathogens by PCR. Antibodies against B. burgdorferi s.l. were detected in 6 (4.9%) individuals, antibodies against C. burnetii in 5 (4.1%) individuals; antibodies against F. tularensis were not detected. In the case of ticks, Rickettsia sp. detected in 5 (7.1%) samples and B. burgdorferi s.l. in 11 (15.7%) samples. The results of this study show that it should be taken into account that the zoo may represent a risky environment for the transmission of zoonotic infections. |
