Description | With reference to elderly suicide in Sri Lanka, this presentation and paper examine demographic characteristics and causes of elderly suicide; help seeking behavior of elderly people who have suicidal ideation, and possible social work interventions. Findings reveal that elderly male suicide is six times higher than elderly female suicide. Chronic diseases and physical disabilities, mental disorders, poverty, family disputes, ill-treatment by children are the main reasons for elderly suicide. Weaker social network, poor family vigilance and, negative attitudes associate with old age-culture are the factor that limit the help seeking behavior that warrants social work system to improve social well-being in the old age. |
