| Description | At the end of the 19th century, Archduke Eugen of Austria-Teschen (1863–1954) decided to modernise the sacral buildings of the Teutonic Order. One of the structures to be rebuilt was the parish church of St. Gothard, which stands near Bouzov Castle. The second commission, a result of the desire to create a landmark in the city of Opava, was the regotisation of the provostial Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Both churches were to be rebuilt at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The plans for their reconstruction were created on commission of the Grandmaster by the Munich architect Georg Hauberrisser (1841–1922), who had been working on the reconstruction of the Order’s main seat – the Bouzov Castle. The Central Commission for the Research and Preservation of Historical Monuments commented on the overall regotisation of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Opava. As the leading expert on conservation, Friedrich Schmidt carried out a field survey, on the basis of which he assessed the age of the building and suggested possible modifications. Georg Hauberrisser subsequently drew up two versions of plans based on Schmidt’s recommendations. These included the completion of the west facade, the appropriate reconstruction of the towers, and the interior’s regotisation. The rebuilding of the Church of St. Gothard had been planned since 1908 when Hauberrisser prepared the first plans to extend it with side aisles and construct a tower on its south side. The form of the church was modified several times, and both the building and the adjacent rectory were to be completely transformed. In the end, none of the plans was realised, as a change of views in the field of monument conservation in Opava prevented it. At that time, preservation of buildings was given preference over radical reconstructions, and the expansion of the Bouzov church was interrupted by the beginning of World War I and the subsequent departure of the Teutonic Order from Czechoslovakian territory. |
