Description Since its publication in 2001, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has been critically scrutinized on several points. Two areas were examined particularly intensively, namely language mediation and (inter)culturality, which some experts believe are given too little attention and for this reason, among other things, occupy a limited space in school and university foreign language teaching. Empirical studies also show that both language teaching skills and cultural communication are neglected in foreign language classes. As a result of this long-term discussion, the CEFR Companion volume with New Descriptors was published in 2018, in which the concept of language mediation is taken up in a new and detailed manner. Language mediation is explicitly viewed here as an important didactic concept that will be of increasing importance in the context of increasing linguistic and cultural diversity. In the search for procedures and tasks for the development of language mediation skills, this article is based on culturally oriented foreign language teaching and focuses on the concept of the Linguistic Landscape.
