Description | Evidence-based public health integrates the best available evidence with knowledge and judgments of experts and other stakeholders to improve the health and protection of populations from infectious and environmental risks. Good quality recommended public health practices should always identify and take into account the quality of the evidence generation process (for example, the design and quality of the study conducted), the transparency of the methods and processes used to generate the evidence, and take into account whether the the strength of the supporting evidence has been assessed. Essential evidence generation tools for public health include systematic reviews (SRs), risk assessments, economic analyses (cost-effectiveness studies), surveillance and expert panels or consensus conferences. SRs represent the most important and valuable types of studies. They summarise all the research published to date, assess its quality and determine the strength of the recommendations, thereby empowering public health practitioners and decision makers policy makers. This article aims to describe the basic focus of recommended practices in public health and presents a brief proposed algorithm for the development, adaptation, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based recommended practices in public health care.
