Description | Potentially toxic elements, commonly referred to as heavy metals, represent a significant environmental burden that can potentially endanger the health of all living organisms, including human. The reason is mainly their toxicity and at the same time relatively easy possibility of intake from the environment. In urban areas around the world, heavy metals are increasingly the subject of scientific research as they pose a permanent health risk to their populations. Increasing interest in this context is also paid to city parks. Parks have the potential to capture and store urban pollutants, and therefore the risks they pose may increase gradually over the years. Sources of pollution in cities are mainly associated with transport and industry. Higher levels of pollution can therefore be expected especially in the vicinity of busy roads and in industrial areas. However, the history of the park and the process of urbanization in its vicinity can also play an important role. Therefore, the distribution of pollution in parks can be variable and is a research question. Risks to the health of park visitors posed heavy metal contamination can, however, be significantly reduced by information and proper management of parks, also with regard to the creation of their structure. Information on potential risks provides park visitors with a simple and at the same time effective tool to reduce the risk of exposure to hazardous substances; This information will then serve as a basis for administrations to develop strategies to increase the environmental quality of parks, which in turn aim to increase the level of ecosystem services provided by green spaces to the public. |
