Description The paper deals with the history of translations of Lithuanian fiction into the Czech language. It deals with the motivation of translations, genres, topics of translated texts, and the format of published texts. Due to the historical context, it is possible to distinguish three periods that have been greatly influenced by historical and political circumstances. Important turning points were 1948, when the communist coup took place in Czechoslovakia, and 1989 when democracy was restored. The first period (19th century - 1948) characterized low production of translations; the selection of texts was based on the ideas of the national revival and comparative linguistics, and folklore texts were most often translated. The second period (1948-1989), on the other hand, is characterized by a large number of published translated texts, the subject matter of which was unfortunately often influenced by communist ideology. Nevertheless, there are also texts with ideologically neutral themes. The third period (from 1990 to the present) then affects the free market, the number of published translations is low, but their subject matter is varied.
