| Description | This presentation aims to illustrate the discord between sustainability as an ideal (a concept) and unsustainability as a fact. It discusses the problems the unsustainable human population is causing both to the natural world and itself and argues for addressing four roots of population growth (i.e., coerced fertility, unwanted fertility, wanted fertility and population momentum). It acknowledges the need for the full availability of family planning methods and services, education, and empowerment of girls and women. Further, the presentation introduces reproductive ethics and argues for embracing smaller families (ideally one-child ethics) as a global norm to combat population momentum, which will be the primary driver of population growth in the 21st century. |
