| Description | The chapter Beyond the horizon of understanding and explanation: towards an epistemology of the anthropological study of religion deals with the epistemology of the anthropological study of religion. It introduces understanding and explanatory approaches in the anthropology of religion. Based on the principle of consilience, it shows that the approaches of contemporary religious studies, cognitive science, and evolutionary psychology allow for a new perspective on the anthropological study of religion, based on a biocultural perspective, which makes it possible to overcome the dichotomy of understanding and explanatory approaches. It attempts to address the epistemological issues in the anthropology of religion using concrete examples from the scientific study of religion. |
