Description | At the 28th Youth Mental Health Conference, Ján Šuba, M.D., presented a paper entitled Autism and Sleep, in which he introduced the issue of sleep disorders in people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and focused on the possibilities of pharmacotherapy, especially the success of melatonin. Our paper builds on this presentation and presents another option for addressing sleep problems through behavioral interventions. In this concept, sleep is viewed as a form of behavior that can be influenced through learning. Behavioral methods for addressing sleep disturbances in children with PAS will be presented, which are most often based on gradual changes in the environment and adjustments in sleep patterns. A brief case study of a child with PAS for whom a behavioral program was successful in addressing problems with falling asleep and waking up at night will also be presented. |
