Description | Portraits of masters called chinzo ??, which were painted as a sign of respect for the teacher and to emphasize the lineage of the patriarchs, are a specific artistic genre in Zen and, for followers of the Zen tradition, also a spiritual artefact. In combination with poetic art, paintings of masters were created over the centuries, accompanied by eulogistic verses of this or that teacher. In this lecture I will present two portraits of the Japanese master Dogen, accompanied by his own poems, in which he celebrates not himself, but in which he extols Buddhist teaching and knowledge through the image of himself. The aim of the talk will be to illustrate not only the visual art of Zen painting, but especially the fusion of the visual and poetic arts in which Zen excelled. |
