Description | Relief representations of the apostle Paul seldom appear on Czech, Moravian and Silesian tiles. In the Gothic and late Gothic period, we encounter depictions of this saint paired with St. Peter. However, a relief from Uherské Hradiště, Otakarova Street shows a different scene from Paul’s life. The conversion motif is one of the most famous and most frequently represented St. Paul subjects, and it only started to feature in tile reliefs with the arrival of the renaissance and with the abundant support of graphic models. Nonetheless, in the Czech lands this theme has so far been identified in only two places. The paper discusses possible reasons for this state, the artistic and technological aspects of the object and the iconographic and spatial connections of tile production in Uherské Hradiště. |
