| Description | In 2018, the idea of creating standardized teaching and study materials was fully established at the English department of the Masaryk University Language Centre at the Faculty of Medicine. At the time, there appeared a need to shift the course concept away from the knowledge of medical terminology and towards communication skills in clinical practice. The paper aims to share the practical experience gained during both the creation and teaching of the materials in the first of the two semesters of the compulsory English language course for students of general medicine and dentistry. The paper focuses on the following areas in particular: i) setting course goals, ii) syllabus creation, iii) choice of authentic and didacticized input material, iv) teaching methodology and task typology. As this paper is being written six months after the actual conference contribution, we also include v) findings resulting from the teaching of these materials in the autumn semester of 2019, with regard to both the experience of individual teachers and the results of the student opinion polls. |
