Description | The contribution will present the developments in the restoration of coppicing management in the Czech Republic. The results of research into the perception of coppice management among representatives of target groups will be presented. In-depth interviews were held with representatives of nature conservation, forest managers, and researchers who are involved in the restoration and establishment of young forests in various localities. There are many reasons for the restoration of coppices The most common motive is the protection of nature, especially biodiversity, young forests represent a specific habitat for various plants and animals and can support many non-forest species. Another widespread motivation is the preservation of the cultural and historical heritage that respondents consider coppices. The role of coppices is also crucial in terms of the need to diversify forest management, which is currently facing serious challenges in the Czech Republic. Moreover, these forests may be more resilient to the effects of ongoing climate change or may be better able to adapt to changing conditions. For some forest owners, especially small and medium-sized ones, it can also be an economically viable alternative. According to professionals in the field, the restoration and establishment of coppices are significantly limited by various barriers that prevent their expansion. The identified barriers will be presented and discussed. |
