Description | The medieval bestiary follows an ancient tradition that ranges from Aesop's Fables through Aristotle and Pliny to the Physeologus, a late antique work by an unknown author who combined descriptions of real and mythical creatures, stones and plants with allegorical interpretations in the spirit of Christian tradition. The text enjoyed great popularity and became an inspiration for works not only medieval but also contemporary. In this lecture, we will focus on the formal and content transformations of literature reflecting the characteristics of earthly, mythical and otherworldly beings and their allegorical meanings in the past and today. |
