Description | Brass band music as a specific expression of folk culture in Moravia, Czech Republic relates to various forms of verbal communication. In the Czech cultural environment, it is often accompanied by controversial opinions: naming, nicknames, and society-wide narratives demonstrating the ideas that individuals or social groups have about brass band music. Various verbal expressions often function as definitions that seem to go against the musical production and repertoire of wind (brass) bands. Such expressions are used to distinguish other public performance from wind (brass) bands. Representatives and listeners of classical and popular music and some members of the folklore movement perceive the production of wind (brass) bands as being in direct opposition to their interpretation of music and dance. The paper illustrates this practice using examples from the region of South Moravia, where brass band music has a specific position. |
