Description | In late September 2021, one fruitbody of an unknown fornicate earthstar was found in the Dyje river valley in Podyjí National Park by the author; its set of characters did not fit any other species known from the territory of the Czech Republic. Comparison with published sources revealed that it represented Geastrum britannicum, a species described only recently (2015) and to date known from the British Isles and Slovakia only. Essential characteristics of this species and features discriminating it from other two fornicate earthstars (G. fornicatum, G. quadrifidum) are presented. Based on the known distribution of G. britannicum, the origin of its occurence in the Czech Republic and Europe is briefly discussed. Regarding the intensely explored domestic earthstar species diversity, recent arrival in the Czech Republic is likely. Also within Europe, the species is apparently introduced from some still poorly ex plored parts of the world. A Czech vernacular name for G. britannicum is proposed. |
