| Description | The study presents the exceptional late Renaissance Chapel of St. Stanislaus at the St. Wenceslas Cathedral in Olomouc (1585—1591) as an object with a specific plurality of meanings and functions. Its understanding can be reached on the basis of the principle of function, in which the historical and cultural conditions of the commission type and the specific artistic form meet. Its commission defined it as a family funerary chapel, and the chosen assignment was a centrally planned building as an established and modern solution. The chapel’s many functionalities were founded on this basis and assigned by the numerous actors who thus gave the building its meaning (the patron, the creator, humanists, visitors and commentators). The nature of the building can be understood in a wide range of functions: sepulchralmemorial, representational on an individual and family level, liturgicalcommemorative, politicalreligious (confessional), which defined it as a private foundation as well as an institutional manifesto of the episcopal office and the Catholic Church in Moravia. The programme of humanist conceptual interpretation was reflected in the chapel, defining it in the light of classical rhetorical topoi. Furthermore, in the context of the building’s second life, one cannot omit its revival during the reconstruction in the mid18th century, again emphasising the personal principle of family commemoration and the patriotic aspect of the identity and tradition of the Olomouc bishopric. |
