Citation
Description This study intends to reflect on the portrait of a figure in Angolan history, Queen Ginga (1583-1663), and in this context address aspects of the relationship between history and fiction in two novels by Angolan writers José Eduardo Agualusa, A Rainha Ginga (2014) and Pepetela, A Gloriosa Família (1997). Although both novels are based on historical events, this information only serves to create its own narrative. Pepetela focuses on the period when the Dutch occupied Luanda, while Agualusa portrays the life of Queen Ginga. Both stories, narrated by marginalized people and describing a part of unofficial Angolan history, co-create Angolan history. On the other hand, the character of Ginga, reproducing here the official image of this queen, gives the stories a certain verisimilitude.
