Description | The chapter introduces the ideological background to the idea of just transition and provides the historical socio-economic context of its emergence, focusing on the role of trade unions, local actors and the environmental movement. By describing the historical development of the concept, the text then focuses on the application of just transition ideas in international and regional policies and, on this basis, briefly assesses the current state of debate and practice in Slovakia. The aim of the text is also to highlight the opportunities, future potential and limitations associated with the concept, which are nowadays linked to the topic of socio-ecological transformation of regions and society as a whole. Therefore, the final recommendations focus primarily on the possibilities and applicability of participatory and emancipatory principles within the current socio-economic context, which fundamentally shapes the form of real policies. |
