Description | The lecture will focus on the intertwining of Buddhist teachings and the poetic art of the Japanese Zen master Dogen (1200 - 1253). Originally from Kyoto's aristocratic circles, Dogen grew up surrounded by all the popular aspects of the courtly culture of the Heian capital, including the poetic arts, in which he himself excelled. During his time in China, moreover, he perfected the art of composing Chinese poems. Later, as a Zen teacher and master, he himself often composed poems, both Chinese and Japanese. In this lecture, we will see how Dogen celebrated the world of nature, but also the world of Buddhist dharma through poetry. |
