Description The aim of this paper is to highlight some aspects of the impact of supervision in healthcare organisations. Supervision is a professional support mechanism that benefits patients, healthcare workers and healthcare organizations. While the evidence for the impact of clinical supervision on patient and healthcare worker outcomes is growing, the evidence for the impact of supervision on organisational outcomes is still weak and needs increased attention. This paper used a qualitative document analysis of scholarly texts on the topic of 'supervision in healthcare organisations'. The focus was on studies with qualitative, quantitative and mixed design. The studies suggest that effective supervision is associated with a) lower burnout rates of supervisees, b) greater job satisfaction, and c) employee retention. Among other things, health professionals believe that adequate supervision can mitigate the risk of burnout, improve the work environment, and contribute to stability in staffing levels. Whereas inadequate supervision can lead to higher levels of stress and burnout, an unpleasant work environment, and increased employee turnover. However, it should also be noted that the impact of supervision on the outcomes of a healthcare organization may not only be positive. The direction of the effect is influenced by the effectiveness of the supervision provided as well as the effectiveness of the supervisor. This highlights the need for organisations to invest in high quality supervision practices and qualified supervisors if maximum benefits are to be achieved from supervision.
