Description | Pharmacotherapy in geriatric patients has peculiarities resulting from morphological and functional differences typical for an aging organism. The research aimed to analyze geriatric patients' pharmacotherapy with a focus on the appropriateness or inappropriateness of the medications used for the most frequently prescribed medications in a given group of patients. The Beers criteria 2019 and Expert Consensus for the Czech Republic 2012 were used to assess the inappropriateness of the medications used. 101 respondents were involved in the analysis (38% men and 63% women) from three facilities for seniors in Púchov older than 65 years. The patients used 952 prescription-only medications, 92 over-the-counter medications, and 72 nutritional supplements. The prevalence of a medication from Beers criteria 2019 list was 16,2%, and the prevalence of a medication from Expert Consensus for the Czech Republic 2012 was 16,7%. Pantoprazole was the most frequent potentially inappropriate medication according to the list of Beers criteria 2019 with a prescription frequency of 44,6% of the total number of patients. According to Expert Consensus for the Czech Republic 2012, alprazolam was the most frequent potentially inappropriate medication, with a prescription frequency of 19,8 % of the total number of patients. |
