Description | Stop bleeding - hemostasis, is a complex and intricate process by which the body protects itself from bleeding out. An important part of bleeding arrest is the coagulation cascade, which the formation of a clot and the arrest of bleeding. This cascade of reactions can be accelerated by the use of haemostatic agents. Haemostatics are substances that help speed up clot formation and thuscontributing to a more rapid arrest of bleeding. They are mainly prepared from collagen, chitosan, oxidised cellulose, gelatine, starch, thrombin, fibrin or mixtures thereof. The problem now available on the market is their high cost, and therefore the aim of this project is to prepare highly effective collagen-based compound haemostatics from previously unused waste sources of collagen, which are of course completely safe and yet more affordable, and derivatives of cellulose derivatives. These hemostats will take advantage of the synergistic properties of the individual components, which together have very effective haemostatic properties. In the framework of the project hemostatic foams were prepared and their physicochemical properties were determined (sorption capacity according to EN 13726-1, morphology by SEM images, porosity), then in vitro testing (clotting time, blood clotting test, submerged method) and finally, the haemostatic properties were also verified by in vivo testing using partial nephrectomy performed on rats. All the in vitro and in vivo hemostatic efficacy results obtained clearly show the strong synergistic efficacy of the materials used in our compounded hemostatics. By us prepared compounded hemostatics achieved better results than the separately tested individual components of our blend, as well as than commercially available hemostatics that were used to compare the results. The newly prepared compounded hemostatic agents with higher efficacy and lower cost may find application in all branches of medicine. |
