| Description | Historians love to tell stories. This case is no different. They now present to the readers the history of the Brno Medical Faculty for more than a century. In addition to presenting the history of the Faculty, the authors aim to contribute to the debate on the state and prospects of Czech medical education. They ask questions about the historical roots of the Faculty's current activities, the reflection of historical experience and its relevance for educational and scientific work. All this is done against the background of the Faculty's complicated history, its highly structured organisational structure and its involvement in the health care system of the whole country. The work interweaves several serious and provocative questions: Was and is the medical-humanist ethos of caring for human health and life the source of the identity of the Faculty and its staff? Can faculty cohesion withstand the increasing pressure for research excellence and the resulting disciplinary specialisation? Is the collaboration between different faculty disciplines effective in meeting the needs of students? In their interpretation of the past and present of the Medical Faculty of Masaryk University, the authors have used archival material and interviews with people involved in the Faculty. The result is a work that is both historical and highly topical. |
