Description | The conference paper focused on a unsuccessful synchronization process of Czech silent film St. Wenceslas (1930). At first, it outlined the circumstances of hiring the composers Jaroslav Křička and Oskar Nedbal to the project as well as the genesis of their musical accompaniment for the premiere screening. Later, the paper shifted its focus on describing the process of negotiation between the Millenium-film production association and the composers regarding the synchronization for the intended distribution of a synchronized film prints. Drawing on the surviving archival evidence, the paper considered several reasons resulting in the failure of a mutual agreement between the both sides stemming from legal issues and industrial factors. These factors proved to be of a great importance mostly in relation to the nature of film music, composers' position in the creative collective, and the issue of claimed and excercised authorship. |
