Description | In 1902, the French sculptor Auguste Rodin visited Prague and Moravia. This trip, associated with his largest international exhibition at the time, was significant not only for the sculptor himself but also left an indelible mark on the places he visited. It was crucial for the generation of painters and especially sculptors at the time, helping them clarify their path towards modern artistic direction and foreshadowing the future orientation of Czech art towards French art. Moreover, the importance attributed by the artistic and social elite of the time to this significant visit reveals much about the priorities and character of Czech society at the beginning of the 20th century. This publication is the first systematic exploration of the accompanying program that was prepared for Rodin. Based on new research of archival sources such as magazines, correspondence, personal archives, and more, it also aims to map the reasons why Auguste Rodin visited Moravian Slovakia, where he visited the Exhibition of Slovak and Moravian Visual Artists in Hodonín, and where an almost "pan-Slovak" celebration took place on the occasion of his visit. The publication accompanies the traveling exhibition project of the same name (2022-2024), created in collaboration with the City Gallery of Prague, the Moravian Museum in Brno, and the Gallery of Fine Arts in Hodonín. |
