Description | The research activities of the RECETOX Centre are supported by state-of-the-art research infrastructure, which is partially centralised in separate units, the so-called core facilities.?The research infrastructure operates on the principle of "open access", providing its capacity to internal and external users from both academia and industry.?Our Central Laboratories also include a core facility, the Microbiome Analysis Laboratory, where we analyse the microbiome of human, animal and environmental samples using modern next-generation sequencing methods. In addition to actual sample analysis, we offer assistance with metagenomic study design, sequencing data evaluation and data interpretation, in collaboration with the Data Services core facilities.? One of the research projects we are collaborating on is the testing of nanofibrous dental floss designed for targeted probiotic application to the gingival sulcus. A specific oral probiotic strain is applied to the nanofiber in an oil suspension. We are developing a multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay to test sulcular fluid samples obtained from study participants who will be flossing with/without the probiotic for a period of several weeks to determine the probiotic contained in the floss as well as selected oral bacteria associated with oral pathologies. Thanks to this methodological approach, it will be possible to evaluate whether the use of dental floss with a probiotic leads in the short or long term to an influence on the relative abundance of specific strains in the sulcus area and whether this modified nanofibre floss with implemented probiotic has the potential to be a preventive tool against the occurrence and development of dental caries and periodontitis. |
