Most mathematics teachers, however, are aware that it is the oldest of school subject Olympiads. In this constribution, we will look at the history of the competition during its first eight years, namely from the founding of the Czechoslovak Mathematical Olympiad in 1951 until the founding of the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1959, while we will mainly focus on the image of the competition in the eyes of the mathematicians who organised as well as in the eyes of the public, including the competitors.
