Description | The Imperial Palace in Constantinople, Theodorich's Palace in Ravenna or Prague Castle - in all cases, these are famous, now perhaps lost, rulers' residences that used to dominate city skylines and represented the ruler's power. This time, however, we will move to southern Moravia with archaeologist Jiří Macháček and art historian Ivan Foletti, to the archaeological site of Pohansko near Breclav. Here, the remains of a fortified complex, probably a Great Moravian court and one of the main residences of the Great Moravian rulers, have been discovered, which still remain largely a mystery. What do we know about their form and what did they have in common with the palaces of Frankish kings and emperors? Were imitations and imitations in the Middle Ages a manifestation of a lack of creativity, or was it instead a sophisticated intellectual concept? And what role did war and political hostages play in the process of cultural transfer? Listen to the fourth installment of the new podcast "The Middle Ages (Differently) Last". |
