Description | This chapter focuses on the European Parliament’s (EP) role within European Union (EU) internal and external climate policy-making. After briefly introducing the EP’s historical evolution, it differentiates the EP’s roles and competences in EU climate policy-making. The chapter then delves into the political dynamics within the EP by discussing polarization and fragmentation trends on climate policies among the EP’s various political groups. Subsequently, the EP’s means to influence external EU climate policies are explored. In sum, the chapter shows that the EP’s roles in EU climate policy-making are manifold and, despite changing majorities and the rise of political cleavages, the EP continues to be a strong internal actor with high external ambitions in climate policies. |
