| Description | In the valley near Tišnov, the abbey of Porta Coeli, translated as "Gate of Heaven", was founded in the 13th century. Surrounded by the wooded hills of the Highlands, the abbey truly lived up to its name. Like other churches and monasteries, it was a safe haven for body and soul amidst a dark, wild landscape. To what extent did medieval builders think about the synergy of landscape and architecture? Why is it necessary to go 'into the field' when studying medieval buildings? And when was the categorical distinction between the secular and the sacred born in our perception?
