| Description | The paper deals with the distribution of the third-person singular present-tense forms of “be” in Old Czech prose texts dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, assessing their status within the framework of grammaticalization theory. I explore the effects of both the verb’s function and its form on its distribution. The observations made here are then contextualized and compared with the situation in contemporary Czech and with broader evidence from Old Czech, focusing especially on the second-person singular forms, which exhibit formal variation similar to that of the third-person singular forms. The numerical data presented here are supplemented by statistical tests whose methods and results are presented in detail online on GitHub. |
