| Description | The cult of Karel Havlíček Borovský found fertile ground during the so-called normalization period. Whether it was a literary treatment of his fate, a rousing reprint of some of his poems, reflections or quotes to strengthen the national awareness, an attempt to create his own work inspired by Havlíček in an attempt to awaken the desire not to give up in the nation because of the ideological system, or his example as an inspiring catalyst of general reflection on the role of an engaged citizen. The emergence of the unofficial anti-communist movement "Havlíčkova mládež" (Havlíček's Youth) is a separate chapter that undoubtedly deserves more detailed historical and sociological research. In this post, I will only point to its representation in contemporary samizdat production as well as other references to Havlíček's work, life and cult. The result will be a presentment of Havlíček as an important actor of the unofficial culture of the second half of the 20th century. |
