Description An expert system called EXPERT has been developed for the identification of vegetation plot descriptions (relevés) in the Netherlands. It is online available as freeware on www.synbiosys.alterra.nl. The algorithm runs in JUICE as well as in TURBOVEG3, and is built on the Floranld_2017 taxonomy of TURBOVEG. The system functions according to other expert systems that have been developed in Europe during the last decade. It is constructed in three sections: one for defining synonym plant names, a second one defining groups of differentiating species, and a third section that includes the assignment rules for all plant communities. These rules – the formal criteria – are defined at nine hierarchical levels. EXPERT assigns relevés to the associations and basal communities of the revised national classification of plant communities (Schaminée et al. 2017), starting with the criteria that are defined at the highest hierarchical level. If a relevé meets a criterium at a high level, it will not be assigned to communities based on criteria at a lower level. In case a relevé doesn’t meet the criteria for associations and basal communities, it may be identified at the level of alliance, order, class or formation, or – in a final case – be indicated as “unknown”.
