Description | Although their value for nature conservation is well known, the distribution of lowland hay meadows in Germany is steadily decreasing. However, we recorded an increase of almost 95 ha of this biotope type in the Wümme floodplain, Lower Saxony. After 15 to 20 years of environmentally friendly management, we could detect a positive development of these former mostly intensively used grasslands. For the future management we suggest an alternating mowing regime with a focus on late May for the first hay cut. We further recommend partial aftermath grazing and hay transfer from already more species-rich sites, to support the diversity of grassland use in the area and the grasslands’ species diversity. |
