Description CYCLE ABOUT BRITTANY 1) The origin, history and geography of the Brittany region The old name of Brittany is Armorica, which means land of the sea. The territory covers an area of 27,208 km2 and is home to more than 3 million inhabitants. The capital of the department is Rennes. It is a very peculiar area, in every way: Breton is different from all other French dialects. 2+3) Individual departments of the Brittany region; cities, language, folklore In the region (especially in the western part of the country), the local Celtic language - Breton (close to Cornish) is still spoken. Recently, efforts to revive the local traditional Romance language Gallo (spoken by about 28,000 speakers) have been increasing. 4) Famous personalities of the Brittany region The Celts who inhabited Brittany are said to have reached our territory. In the Middle Ages, legends about Merlin, Tristan and Isolde and the knights of King Arthur arose in this French region. Among well-known personalities we recall Francois René Chateaubriand, among contemporary authors Nathalie Papin, among composers Yann Tiersen. Brittany was also made famous by pirates - corsairs (Surcouf) and explorers of new territories (Jacques Cartier). 5) Brittany castles, castles, fortresses, churches and calvaries Parish courtyards are unique to the western part of Brittany. These are areas surrounded by a stone wall, which hide a church, a cemetery, an ossuary and, above all, a calvary. 6 and 7) Brittany legends Bretagne is also called the pays de légendes, i.e. the land of legends. Who does not also know the magician Merlin, King Arthur and his knights of the round table, Asterix, Obelix, Panoramix and their other invincible neighbors from a Gallic village. Important characters also include Korrigans, evil elves, then fairies, the White Lady of Trécesson, Ankou and characters from the mysterious forest of Brocéliande.
