| Description | AS WE ARE 12. 9. - 12. 11. 2023 The opening will take place on 12 September at 5 pm. The exhibition As We Are will present the work of New York-based photographer Marie Tomanová, whose work is characterised by themes of identity, gender and freedom. In Dukla, she will present a series of portrait photographs, mainly from her 2021 New York New York project. In Marie Tomanová's portrait work, the empathic connection between the work and the viewer - the possibility of identifying with another person and drawing strength from this connection - is a fundamental idea. It is an inclusive process that allows people to find themselves in the work, and plays a significant role in the importance Tomanová places on individuality and freedom. Being free to be oneself inspires and encourages others to find their way and pursue their dreams. It means feeling comfortable in one's own skin, in one's own identity, whatever it may be. The portraits capture the individuals photographed exactly as they are, and so does Toman. Both claim the right to be themselves, present in the moment, visible and seen. The portrait is proof that we are. We can place Tomanová's work in the context of the increasingly powerful and important voice of youth culture, which is reshaping definitions of gender, society, culture, and is perhaps also part of the process of sparking a subtle but very necessary ideological revolution.
