Description | After 1861 Brno began to transform into a truly modern city. A circular avenue was built, following the example of Vienna, from where many important architects came to put their names on the city map forever. Brno thus became a small imprint of the Austrian metropolis. The city also experienced a glorious era in the first half of the 20th century, especially functionalism was applied here by many famous architects. Alongside the Tugendhats, who chose a functionalist villa at the World Exhibition in Barcelona for their home, stood the exclusive Building A at the Exhibition Grounds, whose form became the model for Brno's new main station. The lecture will focus on famous Brno buildings and sculptures in lesser-known contexts. How did Brussels influence Brno in the 1960s? Which theatre has its own power station? Where is the Pope's heart, or why do Plato's virtues stand in the street? |
