Description | The rate of drug resistance in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia is around 30%. Clozapine is the drug of choice for these patients, but it is not always available to an adequate response to treatment. One of the possible augmentation approaches specifically in nonadherent patients is the application of long-acting parenteral antipsychotics. Our aim was to evaluate the previous experience with the administration of a combination of the atypical antipsychotic clozapine and long-acting injectable antipsychotics to drug-resistant patients at the Psychiatric Clinic of the FN Brno in the Czech Republic and to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of such administration. More than half of the patients did not relapse during the monitored period. The clinical manifestation of adverse effects of the combination treatment appears to be low in our sample of patients, mainly mild and pharmacologically solvable adverse effects (tachycardia) were manifested. Neutropenia was noted in only one of the case reports, which resulted in discontinuation of clozapine and the patient was left on long-acting injectable antipsychotic medication. |
