Description | In our research we would like to contribute to our understanding of how multilingual minds work, in particular how memory works in connection to languages that were lost or forgotten in childhood (Sedivy, 2021, Fivush, 2019). The topic offers limited options as to investigation, that is why we launched a neurolinguistic research (Hidden Languages in Our Minds) and in our current presentation we would like to share some results by presenting a case study involving a word-detection task in an fMRI experiment where we compared the brain activation during a listening task in three languages – mother tongue (Czech), unknown language (Swahili) and forgotten language (individual). We would like to discuss the implications of our findings for multilingualism support, mainly in teaching practice and/or in connection to the possibility of relearning the lost language and the influence it might have on the other languages in use. |
