Description The research synthesis report looks at the impact of the low-carbon transition in terms of jobs, with a focus on the phase-out of coal mining and energy processing (coal phase-out). The coal phase-out is a key part of the transition in the context of the Czech Republic's stated commitment to replace coal in the energy sector with cleaner sources by 2033. The report responds to the efforts of the Just Transition Strategy to minimise job losses associated with the transition away from fossil fuel extraction and processing (primarily in the context of the coal phase-out in the Czech Republic). To this end, it assumes that the basis for setting transition policies needs to be based on accurate knowledge of (1) which sectors and in which regions workers are most likely to be affected by the shift away from coal mining, and (2) what are the employment alternatives that would accommodate workers' existing skills while reflecting their preferences for future career paths. The report summarizes the results of (1) a questionnaire survey of workers in the potentially threatened sectors and (2) an analysis of the proximity of the skill requirements of potentially threatened jobs compared to other jobs in the Czech economy. The report also includes a brief synthesis of other activities undertaken as part of the POSTWORK project - interviews with stakeholders on the coal phase-out and workshops with workers in the coal mining sector. The findings from these activities are put into context with the findings from the questionnaire survey and the proximity analysis of the qualification requirements. The aim of the report is to provide an overview of which workers (in which sectors, in which regions, and in which specific jobs) may be affected by a coal phase-out in the form of a risk of losing their current job; the preferred and most available alternative job opportunities in the event that the loss of current employment occurs.
