Description | The 2023 presidential elections in the Czech Republic were held in an atmosphere full of tension and expectation, which was caused by several simultaneous factors: from the actions and behaviour of the outgoing President Miloš Zeman, through the tense social mood caused by the Russian war in Ukraine and the related energy crisis, rising prices and the arrival of a large number of refugees, to loud protests and demonstrations by anti-system actors. Although these are not factors that have a direct impact on the election of the president or problems that the head of state has within his competence to solve, all these factors had an impact on the atmosphere and form of the election campaigns and the elections themselves. The respective book is devoted to the above-mentioned factors influencing and accompanying the third direct election of the President of the Czech Republic. In addition to the presentation of the election results or the characteristics of the electoral campaigns, it also brings to light other processes and topics that together formed a complex network of motivations and impulses influencing decisions both on the side of the political representation and on the side of the candidates or voters, while this mix resulted in the unequivocal victory of Petr Pavel. What all led to the victory of Pavel? What was the path of the individual candidates and the course of the election race? And how did the candidates perform in individual regions of the Czech Republic? The book, written by a collective of political scientists from Masaryk University, discusses this in five comprehensive chapters. |
